1. | Total IgE and Specific IgE Levels in The Sera Of Children With Otitis Media With Effusion Erdinç Serin, Şebnem Ciğerli, Sevgi Soyöz Pages 9 - 12 OBJECTIVE: in our study we measured the total serum lgE and specific lgE levels in the sera of 30 children with recurrent otitis media with effusion to investigare the incidance of atopy and whether allergy is a riskfactor jrır the middle ear diseases. STUDY DESIGN: This study was perftırmed oıı 30 patients with OME (otiıis media wiıh ejjusion), wit/ı a median age of5.65±2.67 years. Our corıtrol group corısisted of"20 children who had no otorhinolaryngological disorders. The median age of the control group was 5.5±2.39 years. Total lgE, specifıc lgE and eozinophilic cariorıic protein levels (ECP) were measured in the sera of study and control groups. Alt the parameters were measured in the lmmu lite 2000 analyzer, utilizing the chemilum inescent immunoassay method. RESULTS: Total lgE /eve/s were.ftıund to he higher than normal in 25 out of 30 patients. Of these 25 patienrs who had high total lgE levels, 7 patients werefound to have also high specifıc lgE levels. Total lgE levels in the study group were significantly higher than those of the control group (p<0.0003 ). CONCLUSION: Our results were in accordance with the majority of the studies in the literature. in 83% of the atopic children who have got the OME diagnosis, the serum total IgE levels were found high. But we found no correlation with the specifıc lgE levels. In atopic children the increased levels of the total lgE supports the idea that allergy increases the OME incidance. |
